History

The history of Harwood Surveying P.C. dates back to 1860 upon the establishment of the surveying firm of Frank E. Towle & Son, Inc. Mr. Julius Harwood, P.E., P.L.S. and City Surveyor, joined Towle and in 1918 he became the owner of the records of Towle and retained the name. In 1950, Mr. Alfred Harwood, P.E., P.L.S. and City Surveyor, son of Julius, became employed by Towle. In 1972, Julius and Alfred established the firm Harwood & Harwood, P.C., Mr. Andrew Harwood, P.L.S., son of Alfred, joined Harwood & Harwood in 1971. In 1985, Andrew Harwood became a licensed Land Surveyor and part owner of Harwood & Harwood. In 1988, Andrew Harwood P.L.S. and Gary Goldberg, P.E. formed Harwood-Goldberg, P.C. Shortly afterward Andrew Harwood was appointed to the position of City Surveyor. In 1994, Andrew M. Harwood bought Harwood-Goldberg, P.C. and acquired the complete records, drawings, plant, etc. from Towle, Harwood & Harwood and Harwood-Goldberg, P.C., and returned the firm to the exclusive control of Harwood. The field and office staff remained in place.
For over 88 years the name Harwood has always been distinguished in the field of Surveying for excellence, for elevating the entire industry, and for honesty with their clients. Julius Harwood is credited with being instrumental in the development and creation of the City and State Society, for the major reconciliation and Surveyor agreement for NYC, and for allowing Surveyors to be regarded as professionals, as well as for making surveying what it is today. Alfred Harwood is credited with maintaining that tradition and refining a system of field and office procedures that eliminate all possible errors.
Andrew Harwood continues this tradition with his strict adherence to quality control and the creation of a system of Survey Specifications which details for the client what can be expected and with the creation of an in depth system of Surveying Standards for City Surveying which is currently being reviewed for acceptance on the City and State level.
For over one hundred and forty seven, (147) years, Harwood Surveying P.C. and its predecessors have performed hundreds of thousands of surveys in the City of New York and the surrounding area. It has been common for our clients to request our surveys wherever they develop.
During this entire period there has never been even one lawsuit or serious accident.
